The Curse Of Erectile Dysfunction

One of the most common sexual problems faced by men is erectile dysfunction. It is, at times, referred to as impotence which is the condition in which the penis does not harden or get erect.

However erectile dysfunction relates to the state in which there is no erection at all whereas in impotence there is only a lack of all sexual desires or ejaculation difficulties. Not being able to have consistent erections or having erections only for small periods of time is also related to erectile dysfunction.

So what causes such a catastrophic disability in men? Stress due to daily chores is one of the major reasons. In this fast world where men have to slog literally for 14 to 16 hrs a day, the stress and tensions build up. Stress due to family and financial matters also is a major culprit for erectile dysfunction. Moreover this hectic schedule affects their health and they become vulnerable to heart disorders as their sleeping hours are reduced and their food habits go haywire leading to this dysfunction. Lack of exercise and obesity too cause erectile dysfunction.

Men eventually turn to alcohol and cigarettes to bust the stress. This excessive drinking and smoking also causes the dysfunction since blood vessels are widened by alcohol and hence the blood drains out from the blood vessels to the penis during an erection and the penis becomes flaccid.

Diseases in man also lead to erectile dysfunction. Diabetes and heart diseases are major causes for this condition. Almost all middle aged and old men have diabetes and approximately 55% of them suffer from this disorder. Some other diseases like those of the kidney, multiple sclerosis and atherosclerosis destroy nerves, arteries and other smooth muscles which leads to erectile dysfunction. Also diseases like Parkinsons and other temporal lobe disorders can cause this dysfunction.

With ageing, the sexual prowess of a man also decreases. He is more prone to such sexual disorders than ever. This old age brings along with it the necessity to take medicines and drugs which further promotes this dysfunction.

Just like in any other case, here too, the best form of treatment is prevention itself. Having a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly helps. Also one should have adequate amount of sleep everyday and have good eating habits. Staying away from alcohol and smoking greatly decreases the chances of erectile dysfunction.

But in severe cases, one has to depend on medicines and treatment by a specialist. Drugs like Viagra help in achieving erections but not in all cases. But most importantly one should learn to be relaxed during sex. Anxiety and pressure of performing often discourages erection. Moreover these men should be open with their spouses regarding their disorders and must seek their help to enjoy a healthy sex life.
