Fishing may involve a lot of techniques. Methods and equipments are available for the standard fisherman. Other unconventional practices are also still being observed until today.

Fish traps

Fish traps have been around for quite sometime. Varied versions are present in different countries but the point is still the same that is to distract and or trap fishes underneath. Traps may be made of stones fashioned out to trap and capture fishes. Other versions may be made of wooden tripods with nets or baskets submerged. Mesh walls are sometimes made to act as mazes to lure fishes into a net and is then captured in a boat.

Pot traps

Pot traps are for catching crustaceans. These are pots which are baited and submerged underwater. It is constructed in such a way that the entrance is easier than the exit.

Trained animals

There are some regions in the world where people use trained animals for fishing. In Japan and China there is this practice called cormorant fishing. Cormorants are seabirds that are fish eaters. What the fishermen do is to attach a metal ring to the neck of the bird preventing it to swallow big fishes. Big fishes get stuck in the throat because of the ring which gives the fisherman the liberty to take the fish from the bird's throat and considering it as his catch.

Frigate birds are used to fish in reefs in Naaru. These migratory birds are trained by the people to fish in shallow reef regions.

Remoras are sometimes placed in fishing lines to catch turtles in some regions in the Indian Ocean.

In Portugal, a breed of water dogs is brought to fishing expeditions to retrieve fishes and fallen objects from the water. The dogs are also tasked to guard the boats and to send signals in between boats.

Labrador retrievers are also trained to help fishermen pull nets up the shore.

Electro fishing

Electro fishing is a new method of fishing. The process involves electric pulses in the water produced by a handheld gadget which is rod like in form and charged in battery powered back packs or generators when they are used with boats. Protective equipments are used by the handler to avoid accidents. Electric pulses vary in effect. First the machine is adjusted to bring out pulses to attract fishes toward it. After which an adjustment is made for it to stun the fish uninjured.

The techniques mentioned above are means to make fishing a lot easier and fun. Proper handling though is still a must to obtain mutual benefits.
