What makes a great boss?
Often, the big guns at the top of the batting order are the biggest reason people have for loving or leaving the job they're in. Many people take their relationship with their boss for granted - many wish they had enough of a relationship with them to be able to take it for granted. Some bosses like to seize the job by the throat and take absolute control, which often results in employees feeling they've been sidelined and are merely going through the motions as ordered - a great alternative to the Fuehrer-like approach is to give your employees clear targets and let them reach them themselves. This way, they feel trusted, more independent and are more likely to give more of themselves over to the task.
Such hints and tips may not seem obvious at first, but can be highlighted by business coaching focused on how to get the best from your staff. While many don't require much in the way of career coaching or advice, there are always useful bits of information you can garner from those experienced in being in a similar position.
Another feature of a 'good' boss is one who recognizes the efforts of those beneath them and rewards them with feedback, whether positive or negative. Most employees would far prefer a truthful approach rather than saying nothing and bringing it up as a negative at the next performance review. A great boss makes him or herself available to their workers, and gets to know them in a personal milieu as well as at work. That little bit of personal interest can really help nurture the relationship between employer and employee. Once again, this approach to the job is not altogether an obvious one, but it's definitely a popular opinion for those leading coaching courses throughout the business world.
Many bosses will feel that executive coaching is unnecessary, and a waste of time - after all, who wants to go through what seems like training when they've already worked so hard to get to where they are now? However, most coaching of this kind is not so much training as it is the opportunity to share your experiences and find room for improvement and growth.
